Associate author Osamu Tagaya attended Cornell University, not Brown University.
Corrected, Second Edition.
Chapter 1
In the Jack Fellows painting on page 23 of Tainan Kokutai Zeros strafing Clark Field, the color of the tail markings should be white, thinly outlined in a dark color, instead of black.
Chapter 3
On page 47, the photo caption refers to the Zero #152 wreckage as a Model 21. It is in fact a Model 32.
Corrected, Second Edition.
Chapter 4
On page 69, the caption of the photo at upper left refers to B-17 #41-2472, GUINEA PIG, as the oldest B-17 ever assigned to the 43rd Bomb Group. While #41-2472 was a very old plane, the oldest plane assigned to the 43rd was #41-2408.
Corrected, Second Edition.
Chapter 5
The photo caption on page 78 is incorrectly dated November 13, 1943. It should be November 13, 1942.
Corrected, Second Edition.
Chapter 7
The photo at the bottom right on page 115 does not show the wreckage of an LB-30, as the caption claims. That is the wreckage of B-17E 41-24551, FIRE BALL MAIL.
Corrected, Second Edition, page 119.
Chapter 10
A map of a skip-bombing mission flown on April 5th at Kavieng, New Ireland, described on page 163, can be found here. A similar mission flown the day before is described in detail on pages 160-163. The flight paths of each bomber are labeled with a letter, while each ship is numbered and identified in the legend. Note that the ship identifications reflect what the crews reported, and are not necessarily accurate. This image came from the Hoover Cott collection.
Corrected, Second Edition, diagram map page 166, April 4th mission description 168–170.
On page 166, 1/Lt. George K. Shako is incorrectly referred to as Stephen A. Shako.
Corrected, Second Edition, page 173.
Chapter 13
Three of the names in the crew photo on page 227 are misspelled. Bud Thies should be Emil “Bud” Thues, Hank Dominski should be Hank Dyminski, and William Vaughn should be William Vaughan.
Corrected, Second Edition, page 235.
In the photo at the bottom right on page 231, the guitar player is Paul Jones, and the cornet player is his brother, Sam Jones.
Corrected, Second Edition, page 239.
On page 266, the Ki-61 Hein “Tony” depicted in the photograph was once assigned to 68 Sentai, not 61 Sentai. The caption also states that the aircraft was flown by the Sentai C.O., and while the markings indicate this, it is not entirely certain.
Corrected, Second Edition, page 275.
Appendix II
On page 320, Cpl. Elwood K. Myers is listed as killed by an accidental discharge of a .45 that was being cleaned by an airman. Staff Sergeant Louis D. Maenner was the man killed that day. Corporal Myers was not in the 43rd Bomb Group.
Corrected, Second Edition, page 329.
Appendix IV
The photo of the replacement tail on #41-2432, THE LAST STRAW on page 335 was taken in mid-August 1942. The tail was replaced after it was damaged in a mid-air collision on May 11, 1942. The other photo of #41-2432, with the damaged tail, was taken after it was involved in a second collision that damaged the tail section.
Corrected, Second Edition, page 345.
