Wewak Shipping Attack

Striking a Wewak Ship

The 38th’s bombers faced strong resistance from Japan’s fighters at Wewak. Maj. Ezra Best and his wingman, 1/Lt. Ed Gorenflo, led the 71st Squadron over Wewak Harbor on September 2, 1943. Maj. Best, piloting SWEET JEANNE, missed with his bombs by several hundred feet. Gorenflo’s plane, LOBO, can be seen here from SWEET JEANNE’s rear camera just as it completes its attack. Gorenflo’s first bomb hit just off the port bow, while the other scored a ricochet off the deck, causing a fire to erupt on deck.
